Summary:
Poststructuralism and Communication brings together for the first time books, book chapters, and journal articles that discuss the impact of poststructuralist philosophy on all aspects of human communication. A wide array of humanities and social science disciplines have been forced to acknowledge and adjust to the various views advanced by poststructuralism: knowledge and truth do not exist independently but are instead created by discourse; objectivity is not possible-everything is interpretation; writing is the rhetorical equal of speech; philosophy and literature are just alternative forms of writing; and everything is text.
Poststructuralists hoped to promote careful reading, awareness of elusive and multiple meanings, reflexivity, sensitivity to the marginalized, and awareness of alterity, the "Other." Poststructuralist thought has taken its place in the world of ideas as evidenced by the broad spectrum of persons reflected in this volume, including Aristotle, Matthew Arnold, Issac Asimov, Mikhail Bakhtin, Balzac, John Dewey, Paolo Friere, Sigmund Freud, Heidegger, Kant, Kafka, Machiavelli, Nietzsche, Shakespeare, and Thoreau. Poststructuralism has become part of both our popular and scholarly culture, and it continues to significantly influence the society in which we function.
