Summary:
The 2 letters concern Göhler's engagement with the symphonies of Gustav Mahler; in places he reflects back on his interactions with Gustav Mahler about the composer's work. The first letter is written just following Göhler's conducting of Mahler's eighth symphony in Leipzig and invites Alma Mahler to attend the upcoming performance of it in Berlin (later it turns out she missed it). He mentions responses to the work that he had from people in his hometown of Zwickau, the review of Paul Bekker, chief music critic for the Frankfurter Zeitung, and a lecture on Mahler given by his friend Moritz Bauer at the Hochschen Konservatorium in Frankfurt. In the second letter he regrets having missed the first performance of the ninth symphony, in Vienna, and inquires about a new version of the fifth symphony.
