Coussens was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Iowa.
Summary:
Coussens was writing a doctoral dissertation on the figure of the Catholic priest in works by Franz Werfel. He addressed one of his letters to Alma Mahler; on the reverse of that letter are handwritten annotations by her pertaining to a response (including the phrase: "betonen, dass er nie getauft war"). She forwarded the letter to Adolf Klarmann, under cover of a handwritten letter in which she comments briefly concerning the influence of Catholic priests on Werfel, mentioning Cyril Fischer, Georg Moenius, and Johannes Hollnsteiner.

Includes 1 letter from Alma Mahler to Adolf Klarmann pertaining to a response to Coussens and a carbon copy of a bibliography of literature on Werfel, which Klarmann apparently sent to Coussens.
