Van Bruggen was the author of the book Im Schatten des Nihilismus.
Summary:
Van Bruggen was preparing an address to be given at a philologists congress in Leiden on the topic of the spiritual-philosophical message of Franz Werfel's work. He inquires about Werfel's possible engagement with the philosophies of Karl Jaspers and Henri Bergson and asks directly whether Werfel ever converted to Catholicism. Between the lines of the latter question is a handwritten annotation by Alma Mahler: "Nein!"
