Summary:
Love is the essence of the Christian message as Medieval theologians and scholars frequently stated. But how does this love express itself? How did the Christian intellectuals, these specialists on salvation, perceive of the emotional realm, its modalities and finalities, not only in a religious context, but also psychologically and socially? This study uses lexicological and historical-anthropological procedures to answer these questions. It is focused on texts written by the early Cistercians, notably the English monk Flred de Rievaulx (11101167). It shows that, and how, the Cistercians, for the first time in the history of Latin Christianity, were able to combine the spontaneous and rational aspects of emotional dynamics. French text.
