Biography/History:

Marie von Bülow was the widow of the pianist and composer Hans von Bülow, and an acquaintance of Berliner's; Anna Mahler was Alma Mahler's daughter.

Summary:

Berliner, a physicist, was the author of, among other works, a successful physics textbook, and the founder of the significant scientific periodical Die Naturwissenschaften, which he edited from 1913 to 1935. He had been a good friend of Gustav Mahler. His correspondence with Alma Mahler, besides covering diverse topics in a personal exchange, chronicles the increasingly oppressive conditions under which Berliner lived as a Jew in Nazi Germany. He committed suicide in 1942.
