- Summary:
- Any study of the Neolithic of Scotland inevitably includes discussion of its monuments, one of the most distinctive elements of the period. This collection of papers reflects on what we have learnt about the Neolithic monuments of Scotland through recent research and furthers debates which seek to improve our understanding of their architecture, function and meaning and, as highlighted here, their setting within the landscape.
- The contributors to this volume present new approaches to particular sites or site types, drawing on existing data and presenting new research gained through fieldwork survey and excavation. Overall they promote a better understanding of the regional context of Neolithic monuments in Scotland and traditions of monumentality. Whilst some of the papers are highly descriptive and interpretative, many others are suggestive or speculative of the significance of the monuments and links between the living and the dead. In regarding the monuments of Scotland as places rather than discrete site types, the authors offer new insights into the chambered cairns, henges, stone circles and rock art of Orkney, western Lewis, southern Uist, Caithness and the Scottish mainland.
