Summary:
Lover and War in Afghanistan presents the true stories, collected by a newly wed couple in April 2004, of fourteen ordinary women and men living in northeastern Afghanistan. In nearly a quarter-century of uninterrupted war, the people of Afghanistan have endured foreign invasions, ethnic strife, a fundamentalist Islamic totalitarian regime, and the unending crossfire of rival warlord factions. The country remains an object of fascination for journalists, academics, and filmmakers from around the world. In the midst of it all, it is a startling and powerful experience to discover, here, the voices of the Afghan people themselves.
We hear from Gulbuddin, a former Taliban fighter; Nikolai (Faizmuhammad), a Ukrainian soldier who defects from the Soviet army; Mahtabgul, who loses first her husband, then her children, to war, exile, and a monstrous act of human cruelty; Niyaz-Turdi, whose house is hit by Soviet bombs the night before his wedding; Humaira who, after enduring a tumultuous life in and out of exile and standing up to Tajik gangsters and marauding mujahedin, becomes a confessional for women with whom she works in post-Taliban Afghanistan; and Ali Muhammad, an ornery Uzbek mullah who cannot restrain himself from speaking his mind even in the presence of Taliban officials. We meet eloped lovers, boys who marry at the age of twelve, and women who do everything in their power to keep their families together. Above all we meet real people, bewildered, indignant, kindly, heartbroken, and hopeful.
