Summary:
The various European words for personality derive from the Greek term for a theatrical mask, Nijman (international law, U. of Amsterdam) reminds readers. She says that though national sovereignty has been recognized as the mask that signifies which parties are legitimate actors on the international stage, other conceptualizations of international legal personalities have been proposed throughout history. Her study explores international thinking about the concept of international personality, not as it is functioning in international legal documents like treaties, statutes, or case law, but as an idea that has been used in international legal scholarship from Leibniz to the present.
