Summary:
When Muslim and Christian scholars met in 2001 in Samsum, Turkey for a symposium on inter-religious dialogue as a contribution to world peace, little did they know that September 11th was less than three months away. The events of that tragic day underline the urgency of such dialogue. As conflicts surfaced in Afghanistan, Palestine/Israel, Kashmir, Pakistan, Chechnya, and Iraq, the need for the discussion of underlying issues and not just military responses was evident. These Christian and Muslim reflections from the symposium in Turkey, which straddles East and West, are an attempt to explore some of these issues.
The biblical and qur'anic analyses of human nature, which lie at the heart of conflicts, are shown to be more similar than is commonly understood. The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, so central in the New Testament understanding of the divine response to human wrongdoing, are seen as legitimate interpretations of the Qur'an, according to some of the most authoritative Muslim commentators. The papers found in Muslim and Christian Reflections on Peace explore how people of diverse faiths can embrace in the midst of discord even as they discuss such issues of truth and justice.
