- Each volume is in two parts; each part, with the exception of vol. 1, pt. 1, has a separate titlepage.
- The imprints to vol. 1, pt. 2 and vols. 2-3, both parts, read: "Printed for C. Bathurst"; those to vols. 4-5, both parts: "Printed for C. Davis, J. Hodges, and W. Bowyer"; that to vol. 6, pt. 1: "Printed for C. Davis, C. Hitch and L. Hawes, C. Bathurst, R. and J. Dodsley, and W. Bowyer"; and to vol. 6 pt. 2: "Printed for C. Davis, C. Hitch and L. Hawes, J. Hodges, C. Bathurst, R. and J. Dodsley, and W. Bowyer." - The general titlepage and the titlepage to the first part of vols. 2-6 are in red and black.
- A further three volumes of 'The works', published 1764-75, as well as four volumes of 'Letters', 1766-68, and 'A supplement to Dr. Swift's Works, being the fourteenth in the collection,' 1779, were intended to accompany these six volumes.
