Summary:
Most famous for his revolutionary ballets Petrouchka and The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky produced several brilliant sets of solo songs, heavily influenced by Russian folk music but transformed by his own remarkable sensibility. This striking repertoire of vocal music is now collected for the first time in a single affordable volume.
Among the texts set to music are a pair of poems by Paul Verlaine, "Un Grand Sommeil Noir" ("A Great Black Slumber") and "La Lune Blanche" ("The White Moon"); Pushkin's "The Faun and the Shepherdess", with French and German texts; "Con Queste Paroline", from Stravinsky's ballet version of Pergolesi's Pulcinella; and several original interpretations of traditional Russian songs.
All scores are for voice and piano, with the instrumental ensemble accompaniments to "Three Japanese Lyrics", "Pribaoutki" ("Nonsense Rhymes"), and "Berceuses du Chat" ("Cat's Cradle Songs") appearing in full score as well as in piano reduction, thus providing a fascinating opportunity to compare the two versions. This unprecedented collection also contains several earlier works, including the elegant "Pastorale" of 1907.
