Summary:
Since her first visit to Pennsylvania's legendary Chanticleer Gardens on her 41st birthday, Beth Kephart returned again and again, mostly alone, sometimes with her son Jeremy, a developmentally disabled boy whose story she told in A Slant of Sun. Kephart went to Chanticleer to chart the seasons and to learn the names of things, but also to come to terms with endings and beginnings, for example, to reconcile the fact that Jeremy no longer needed her in the way he once had. Ghosts in the Garden movingly chronicles that experience, carrying readers through a two-year cycle of inquiry, inspiration, and, finally, wisdom. Kephart asks the questions everyone entering middle age asks - how to remember one's past, whether one's life has fulfilled its promise, and what legacies one wishes to leave behind. Though a personal journey into a particular place, Ghosts tells a universal tale about a quest for peace and purpose.
