- Summary:
- Alvar Aalto Apartments opens views into Aalto's ideas about dwelling. The Internal organization of an apartment, the relationship of the home to the outside world, the ease of movement from one space to another and the "city on the hill" were all issues of great importance in Alato's deliberations as he tried to overcome the inherent problems associated with the design of residential spaces. This book presents ten apartment blocks and two students dormitories designed by Aalto and built in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and the United States between the 1920s and the 1960s. Among them are Baker house at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, USA; National Pensions Institutes employee housing in Helsinki, Finland; Korkalovaara apartment buildings in Rovaniemi, Finland; and Schonbuhl apartment building in Lucerne, Switzerland.
