Summary:
In prefatory remarks to 19 contributed chapters, Zhiyuan (National U. of Singapore) and Korzh (Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Singapore) note that the genome sequencing of two popular experimental fish models is nearing completion. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes), small aquarium fish, are increasing being used in medical research as well as in developmental and genetic analysis. International scientists provide state-of-the-art coverage of their development (e.g., maternal factors, muscle development, central nervous system); and genetic tools in molecular developmental analysis (e.g., cloning, transgenic technology). Two chapters focus on medaka genome mapping and embryonic stem cells. The volume includes color graphics. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
