Summary:
Knight reflects on the Holy Week narrative in the Gospel of Matthew in light of Jewish-Christian relations in the post-Holocaust period. He deals with biblical texts in light of anti-Semitic and anti-Judaistic overtones. He uses the strategy of the Midrashic process to reach for the rich field of meanings that grows as the stories and the relationship they describe lives and grow. The result is a re-configured identity for Christians--as in the example of Jacob wrestling with the angel at the Jabbok (Gen. 32:22-32). This leaves us with a "limp" of humility as Christians who face up to the post-Shoah world. According to Knight, the liturgical and homiletical materials developed for Holy Week in the church should reflect this reality. A "midrashic" approach is one in which texts become open-ended, inviting dialogue as we reflect on the passion of Jesus in light of the lens and experience of the Holocaust.
