- Summary:
- In this English translation, Achim (history, Romanian Academy, Bucharest) compensates for the lack of reference to Roma or Gypsies in traditional histories of Romania. Arguing that this people have been a prominent presence in the country since the latter 14th century, he traces their early enslavement, emancipation, continued marginal status, deportation under Antonescu's regime, and evolution of their current identity as a transnational European minority. A map shows territorial changes in the country through the centuries. First published in Romanian in 1998 as Tiganii in istoria Romaniei by Editura Enciclopedica, Bucharest. Distributed by Books International. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
