Summary:
Six faculty from the Universiti Sains Malaysia contribute six essays which were originally presented in a series of seminars at the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang in 2002-2003. Focusing on the themes of ethnicity, national identity, and nationalism, they support findings from studies done in the 1960s and 1970s demonstrating that Malaysia's various ethnic communities remain distinct entities due to Malaysia's political structures and provisions in the country's constitution, and that this fosters "communalism," where every ethnic group works for its own self-interest. Communalism has determined the nature and form of Malaysia's nationhood, and is seen as central to the understanding of the emergent nationalism, politics, and multiculturalism of the country.
