Concerns the Mémoire justificatif pour servir de réponse ä l'Exposé, andc. de la cour de France (London, 1779), written by Edward Gibbon at official request, which relates to the conduct of France in assisting the Americans in the war for independence.
Translation of an anonymous pamphlet entitled: Observations sur le Mémoire justificatif de la cour de Londres (Paris : Imprimerie royale, 1780), attributed to J.-M. Gérard de Rayneval in: Barbier, M. Dictionaire des ouvrages anonymes et pseudonymes. 2d edition (Paris, 1827), s.v. 23110. Attributed to Pierre Beaumarchais by Evans, who names Peter Stephen Du Ponceau as translator. Beaumarchais published a distinct work with the same title under his own name, whose imprint reads: A Londres, ä Philadelphie, 1779.
