Summary:
In recognition of the millennium, the principal theme of the Seventh International Congress of the Societe Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore (held in Budapest in April 2001) was the "experience of time in the life of societies and individuals." In this volume, one of a series to result from the conference, editor Paladi-Kovacs (director, Ethnographic Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) presents some 70 papers drawn from the ethnological conference. The major sub-themes explored by the papers include the ethnography of states, nation, transnationalism, and globalization; ethnology of mobility and migration; past and memory; European perspectives on folklore and ethnology; narratives, autobiographies, and memory; cultural identity; urban transformation; community studies; gender and ethnology; and museums, heritage, and identity.
