In recognition of the millennium, the principal theme of the Seventh International Congress of the Societe Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore (held in Budapest in April 2001) was the "experience of time in the life of societies and individuals." In this volume, one of a series to result from the conference, editor Paladi-Kovacs (director, Ethnographic Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) presents some 70 papers drawn from the ethnological conference.
