- Summary:
- This collection of essays charts the explosive growth of London from the Great Fire, when much of the city was destroyed and rebuilt, to the Great Exhibition, when the stench from the Thames was so bad that Parliament had to be suspended. As the city changed from medieval to modern, a new kind of society developed along with the new landscape. The essays address such issues as crime and sex and profile characters ranging from cabbies to preachers.
