Summary:
Mark Hertzberg has written-and photographed-the first book to tie together all the Racine works of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), whose revolutionary designs galvanized American architecture. The greatest American architect of all time left an incomparable legacy of private homes and public buildings. In Racine-known as "invention city"-home to the Waring blender, Golden Books, and other innovations, almost all the significant stages of Wright's career after 1900 are represented. Hertzberg punctuates his lively, personalized account with anecdotes from people who worked or lived in Wright's creations and with inviting color photographs. An introduction by Edgar Tafel, one of Wright's first apprentices, leads off Wright in Racine, which includes the first book discussion of the newly documented Miles house remodeling project and the architect's smallest (and unrealized) commission, the airport lounge/cafe. In-depth discussions of Wingspread, the SC Johnson Administration Building, the subsequent Research Tower, the Hardy and the Keland houses, and other projects round out Hertzberg's insightful study.
