- Summary:
- This book covers a range of subjects related to women, nursing and Islam, with insights provided by a diversity of authors, each with their own relevant expertise. The writings encompass multiple dimensions of the field, ranging from the status of girls' and women's education to their place in society. The volume makes a significant contribution to understanding nursing from the perspective of Islamic society. It also presents nursing in a broad social context while simultaneously providing country-specific examples through well-written country vignettes from Iraq, Lebanon, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Nancy H. Bryant spent significant time working and travelling in Islamic countries. This experience helped her to understand first-hand the tremendous need for nurses in Islamic societies. However, she also learned about the reluctance of young Muslim women to join this profession for reasons ranging from poor remuneration and working conditions to traditional and cultural constraints including its low status and image. Among other issues, contributors discuss nursing education and professional standards, midwifery and violence against nurses and women. They describe not only problems and limitations, but also changes in positive directions for nursing in Islamic societies.
