- Summary:
- The logbook contains the records of one voyage by the brigantine Polly between Philadelphia and Hamburg and another between Philadelphia and Bremen in 1795 and 1796. The entries were made on paper of varying size and sewn together out of order (1 Aug. 1795-16 Feb. 1796, 12 May-21 Aug. 1796, 23 Aug.-15 Oct. 1796, 22 Feb.-11 May 1796) with sailing twine in a cover of sailcloth. Entries include information on weather, latitude, crew members, and the ship's course. Accompanying material includes notes by former owner Edward G. Brownlee on the ship's rigging, equipment, crew, and cargo; notes by Brownlee on the provenance of the logbook; a wooden box made by Brownlee in 1972 for the logbook; and photographs and text for an exhibit on the Polly at Woolman Commons in 1999.
