- Summary:
- According to Horowitz (political science, U. of Wisconsin, US) and Schnabel (senior research fellow, Swiss Peace Foundation, Switzerland), human rights violations "are often particularly severe in transition societies that are undergoing significant political, social, and economic transformation." They bring together an international group of scholars from political science, sociology, law, and other fields in order to identify the sources of human rights violations, examine their consequences, and address how states and other organizations can act to prevent transition-related human rights violations. The papers address questions of universality versus cultural specificity, international criminal courts, U.S. foreign policy, and other overarching topics and include a number of case studies of the sources of human rights violations in countries on five continents.
