- Summary:
- This moderately priced volume brings together the full scores of three much-studied and often-performed works by Stravinsky. Written in 1914, Pribaoutki, or nonsense rhymes, is a delightful set of four brief songs for solo voice and eight solo Instruments. Renard (1915-1916), adapted from Russian folktales. features animals as its characters -- stylized creatures through whom Stravinsky comments ironically on human greed and deception. The texts of these two works are in Russian, French, and German, with notes. There is an English scenario giving the gist of Renard, and a new English translation of Pribaoutki by Stanley Appelbaum. The brilliant Ragtime for Eleven Instruments reflects Stravinsky's keen interest in the jazz idiom of the time. Musicians, composers, and all lovers of Stravinsky's music will want to add these scores to their music libraries.
