Summary:
The four-volume Battles and Leaders of the Civil War remains one of the all time best-selling works ever published on the War between the States. First released in 1887, it provided the American public with an absolute treasure trove of articles written by many of the leading figures of the war, along with a visual feast of drawings and paintings by some of the era's most popular artists. Much of the content for this seminal collection was first published serially in Century Magazine. All but lost to subsequent generations were many more accounts written by prominent Civil War leaders. These equally historic and valuable documents -- both articles and artwork -- were featured in such diverse and important publications as the Philadelphia Times, which ran a series entitled 'Annals of War: Chapters of Unwritten History' from 1877 to 1889, Scribner's, Atlantic Monthly, Harper's New Monthly, McClure's, Hearst's Magazine, the National Tribune as well as many articles written in Century Magazine after Battles and Leaders of the Civil War was published. Finally, these often brilliant, sometimes poignant, and always fascinating views into the greatest drama of American history are available again, continuing the tradition of excellence begun over a century ago, brought together by two of the finest Civil War scholars working today.
