Summary:
In recent years there has been a remarkable transformation in our knowledge about the role of vascular factors in cognitive decline and dementia. No longer viewed as 'just' causing the second most common form of dementia, it is now recognised that cerebrovascular disease influences clinical expression of cognitive and non-cognitive features in a variety of cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease itself. Vascular processes interact with neuro-degenerative ones, and both appear to be risk factors for the other. This exciting new knowledge base allows important new insights into, and indeed challenges current views on, diagnosis and management of all dementias. Cerebrovascular Disease, Cognitive Impairment and Dementia contains contributions from leading international experts in the field and covers epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical features, investigations (including neuroimaging), management, and service and carer issues. It is a truly comprehensive yet accessible text which puts basic research findings in a clinically relevant context and covers the whole spectrum of cerebrovascular disease in relation to cognitive and non-cognitive features. The book will appeal to psychiatrists, neurologists, geriatricians, allied health professionals and others involved in the care of patients with cognitive impairment and dementia.
