Summary:
As Janowski, an expert in the intellectual and political history of Poland, explains in the introduction, Poland did not have the social elements (capitalist development, a strong third estate, and so on) usually associated with the rise of liberalism, but there was an imported strain of liberal thought adapted to Polish circumstances. Accordingly, he does not simply list and biographize liberal Polish thinkers, but instead traces the development of liberal philosophy in Poland, including even the contributions from groups that were hostile overall to liberalism. The target audience is generally fellow academicians and students specializing in East European intellectual history, and especially those with a familiarity with Polish nineteenth 19th-century history, since some acquaintance with this subject makes the discussion easier to follow. The book was originally published in Polish in 1998 (Polish Batory Foundation, Warsaw, and the Spoleczny Instytut Wydawniczy Snak, Cracow). Distributed by Books International.
