- Summary:
- The most distinguished Spanish composer of the early twentieth century, Manuel de Falla was deeply influenced by the traditional music of his homeland. Combining Andalusian folk music and the classical tradition of Spain with other European styles, Falla created a distinctive musical voice. This compact, attractive compilation of Falla's all-time favorites for piano is headed by the famous "Ritual Fire Dance" from the theater piece El amor brujo (Love, the sorcerer). Completed in 1915, the original version, scored for just ten instruments, was performed for the first time in Madrid; a year later, the full orchestra version was scored, and it continues to be a popular concert item. This solo piano version captures the drama of the dance, in which a beautiful gypsy attempts to drive off the ghost of her dead lover. In addition, this volume features the stirring "Pantomime" (also from El amor brujo), three dances from El sombrero de tres picos (The three-cornered hat), the evocative "Four Spanish Pieces," and the enchanting "Homenaje" -- an exceptional sampling of great music for piano.
