Summary:
Throughout his Prolific Career Lucas Samaras (b. 1936) has created a heterogeneous and highly idiosyncratic body of work in which self-depiction is arguably the creative mainstay. The artist has relentlessly exploited his own image in drawings, sculpture, environments, film, and photography. Provocative and often confrontational, the artist seems to revel in his profoundly narcissistic self-portraiture, for which he makes no apology. His work demonstrates a unique focus; the vision and the mastery with which it is created place it firmly in the continuum of art from Byzantium to twenty-first century computer manipulated images. In his unsparing exploration of himself, Samaras has employed multiple media and invented new techniques; these and his innovative approach to materials have exerted significant influence on younger artists.
Born in Macedonia, Greece, Samaras grew up during the destruction and desolation of World War II and the ensuing Greek civil war. In 1948 he immigrated to the United States where he later studied art and then art history at Rutgers and Columbia Universities. Since 1964 he has lived in Manhattan. One of the most original artists of his generation, Samaras has increasingly remained isolated from the artistic mainstream and dominant trends, while creating new work on an almost daily basis. Unrepentant Ego: The Self-Portraits of Lucas Samaras, which accompanies the Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition of the same title, follows the development of Samaras's self-portrait leitmotif, from the late 1950s to the present. With an extended chronology by Whitney curator Marla Prather that traces the influences and artistic trajectory of Samaras's life; an essay by Donald Kuspit that provides an in-depth analysis of Samaras's self-portraiture; a full-color plate section; and an extensive bibliography and index, this volume is an essential guide to the life and work of an exceptionally challenging and complex artist.
