- Summary:
- It is both an exciting and critical time to be studying the Asia-Pacific's economic and security relations. The region has experienced a period of turbulent change since the mid-1990s. This has mainly centred on two 'shock events'; the first being the 1997-8 East Asian financial crisis; and the second the al-Queda terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001. These shocks had significant catalytic effects upon the international relations of the Asia-Pacific. Moreover, they revealed the extent of economic and security interdependence that connect different communities and states in the region, and consequently demonstrated the imperative to enhance different levels and forms of co-operative activity among them. This volume examines new developments in economic and security co-operation in the Asia-Pacific through the analytical lens of three 'prime dimensions': the tension between the post-shock forces of imperative cooperation and the counter-forces of Asia-Pacific complex diversity; the growing conflation between economic and security issues - or the economics-security nexus - in Asia-Pacific international relations; and the relationship between the Asia-Pacific's new economic and security bilateralism and regional-level forms of co-operation, integration and governance.
