Hurricane Floyd was the costliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to strike North Carolina. Although the hurricane's intensity weakened considerably before the storm made landfall in eastern North Carolina on September 16, 1999, its accompanying heavy rainfall swelled the state's rivers, flooding more than 60,000 homes, taking 52 lives, and causing an estimated $6 billion in damages.
