- Summary:
- This is the third in a biennial series of exhibitions and supporting catalogues begun in 1999 to bring the work of Native American fine artists to greater public attention. As Lucy Lippard, author of the introduction, writes, the 2003 honorees are "a wildly diverse and inventive lot." Paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, and installation pieces of variety, color and power abound. Even a quick examination of these pages demonstrates Lippard's contention that "the infinitely various ways of negotiating cultural space are apparent in contemporary Native art." Each Eiteljorg Fellowship includes a distinguished artist and five fellows. The 2003 distinguished artist is painter Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee). The fellows are Corwin "Corky" Clairmont (Salish/Kootenai), Robert Houle (Sauteaux), Nora Naranjo-Morse (Tewa-Santa Clara Pueblo), Nadia Myre (Algonquin), and Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie (Dine/Seminole/Muscogee).
