Summary:
Wheezing disorders in infants and young children are among the most common and most challenging problems facing the pediatrician, with a reported incidence estimated to be as high as 50% in the United States and Australia. Although rather less common in Europe, wheezing disorders in preschool children occupy a large part of the pediatrician's time and constitute a considerable burden on the delivery of health care. Fernando Martinez and Simon Godfrey, both world opinion leaders in the field of pediatric respiratory disease, have prepared this book with the aim of better familiarizing clinicians with this often perplexing clinical problem. Focusing on practical issues, the authors expose the lack of existing data on the etiology and pathophysiology of the disease process, outline the optimal approach to diagnosis and management, and discuss the importance of early wheezing as a predictor of the future development of chronic respiratory symptoms later in life.
Contents:
1. Epidemiology of wheezing in infants and preschool children 1
2. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and wheezing 21
3. Immunology of wheezing disorders in infants and preschool children 31
