Summary:
The United Nations University's "People, Land Management, and Environmental Change" (PLEC) project brings together scientists and smallholder farmers working in teams in 16 countries around the world to identify, evaluate, and promote small-scale farmers' resource management systems and practices that conserve ecological processes and embrace biodiversity for generating income and handling changes in social and natural conditions. Reporting on findings from demonstration sites in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, the text provides an introductory overview to agricultural biodiversity in East Africa, and discussion of the components of agricultural biodiversity, farmers' perspectives, and policy recommendations for the area.
