- Summary:
- Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important figures of postwar American art. Celebrated for his exuberant, color-filled canvases and renowned as an influential teacher for generations of artists -- first in his native Germany, then in New York and Provincetown -- Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism. Along with Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Arshile Gorky, he gave impetus to this style, the first uniquely American school in painting. Published to accompany a retrospective of his work at the Naples Museum of Art, Florida, Hans Hofmann: A Retrospective examines the full range of his achievement and influence both as an artist and a theorist.
- The selection of seventy paintings featured here highlight every stage of his career, with a generous selection from his major works of the 1960s. His extraordinary use of rich, vibrant colors in striking structural compositions distinguish him as a modern master. As a teacher, he brought to America knowledge of the work of European modernists (he had met Picasso, Braque, and Matisse in Paris, where he studied as a young man), and developed his own philosophy of art, which he expressed in numerous essays. One of these statements -- which counts among the most important of his discussions on the role of color in painting -- is included here. Also included are contributions by Helen Frankenthaler and Sir Anthony Caro, and a little-known appreciation of Hofmann by Tennessee Williams.
