- Summary:
- This series offers a timely observation of the changes in young people's socialisation in Europe. How young people learn to understand their own societies and the societies of their neighbours will influence the future development of social and political institutions. The ways higher education institutions educate social workers, teachers, early childhood workers and youth workers about social understanding and learning needs to be informed by contemporary European policies and practices. This series comments on current developments and research. Published in association with CiCe -- the European Union Thematic Network Programme 'Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe' -- the volumes offer reflection, analysis and contextualisation of recent findings, locate these in pedagogic practice, and point to their educational implications. This volume examines children's and young people's conceptualisation of political institutions and concepts. Political understanding empowers individuals to cope with the demands and opportunities afforded by citizenship. We need to learn more about how children and young people understand personal, national and international political phenomena, and consider how schools can further their understanding. What do they understand about power, justice, rights and responsibilities? This volume surveys the different age groups in Europe for whom personal, local, national and international contexts are significant.
