Summary:
The 20th Century was undoubtedly the century of great transformation in the design of the home, the family unit of habitation. It was the time that brought a huge amount of programmatic freedom in domestic design and gave man the ability to freely choose and change the internal layout of his abode. One of the favourite themes of modern architecture has been to treat the house as an experiment and its design as a mechanism of evolution. The question this book aims to answer is whether the house can continue to be the laboratory of architecture or whether, since 1945, we have been repeating received formulas. It presents the work of 19 architects, all internationally acclaimed dwelling designers including Ernst Beneder, George Baines, Tadao Ando, Dieter Thiel, Rick Joy, Shin Takamatsu, Rem Koolhaas, William P. Bruder, Tom Maine (Morphosis) and more.
