- Tells of the friendship between Vladimir Arsenyev, a well-known Soviet explorer, and his guide, Dersu Uzala. Dersu is taken on as guide to a surveying crew. At first perceived a naive and comical relic of an uncivilized age, Dersu quickly proves himself otherwise with displays of ingenuity and bravery.
