Written while the author was detained in the U. S. Army's Disciplinary Training Center in Pisa in 1945.
In the first impression, pages 104 and 105 occur in the wrong order which should be, as numbered 103, 105, 104, 106.--Cf. Gallup.
Because of Britain's strict libel laws British publication was delayed for a year while a number of omissions and expurgations were made in the text.
