- Summary:
- The Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849 abolished feudal government and society and laid the foundation for a free-market capitalist economy. Fundamental reforms included the emancipation of the serfs, equality of all citizens before the law, and the establishment of a popularly elected parliament. The Hungarian revolution was interdependent with other revolutions in Europe. This volume relates the Hungarian revolution to the events of the Habsburg monarchy as well as the rest of Europe, concentrating on initiatives in international relations.
