- Summary:
- Fumihiko Maki was born in 1928 in Tokyo and is regarded as a doyen of modern Japanese architecture. After completing his first degree at the University of Tokyo he studied at Harvard University and Cranbrook Academy, and worked with Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Josep Lluis Sert, before going on to open his own office in Tokyo in 1965. He is regarded as one of the founders of the Metabolism movement and since that time has retained an eminent position in world architecture. In 1993 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize.
- Maki's architectural language is defined by meticulous detailing with rational, precise yet imaginative forms. Of particular importance to Maki is the complimentary relationship of his designs with their surroundings, notably the city. His sophisticated spaces and forms are imbued with a sensibility inherited from his Japanese culture.
- In this book Jennifer Taylor places Maki's work within the context of modern architecture and the evolving circumstances and perspectives of Japan. Her interpretation identifies space, city, order and making as the parameters which define Maki's oeuvre; they are threads that the architect weaves together to create a continuous but ever-varied strand of ideas and projects.
