- Summary:
- DESCRIPTION Stella Suberman, now eighty years old, begins her story in the late 1930s, when she is barely aware of the growing threat of war, the Nazi persecution of Jews in Europe, and the anti-Semitism that surrounds her in Miami Beach. She is also unaware of her own prejudices. She marries Jack Suberman at the age of nineteen, when America is on the brink of war, and for the next few years she follows her bridegroom around the country as he trains to be a B-29 bombardier. Once she leaves her sheltered Southern life, her world becomes larger than she ever imagined. And just as America loses its innocence, so does this young wife and mother waiting for her husband to return from war.
