- Summary:
- I ran upstairs to the kitchen, where my mother was washing the floor. I remember very clearly saying, "Mom, somebody shot President Kennedy." And after I said it, I laughed. Was it the incongruity of such grave news coming out of my own eight-year-old mouth? I remember thinking, even then, I am laughing at something that isn't funny; this is an interesting phenomenon. My mother regarded me blankly for a moment. Then she said, "Oh, my God, " dropped the mop and ran past me downstairs, as if I had disappeared from the room. I stood in the kitchen, trying to process that moment. I had apparently vanished in the glare of History, like the moon in the morning sky.
