- The story focuses on Edmund Dantes, betrayed by friends and unjustly accused and imprisoned for conspiring with Napoleon Bonaparte. In prison, Dantes learns of the valuable hidden treasure of Monte Cristo, a treasure he eventually uncovers after escaping from his unbearable captivity.
