First edition, first printing, issue in 4 volumes.
Binding is red sand-grained cloth. Boards blocked in blind with rectangular designs, on front board central roundel in gilt; spine with with lettering same but all in roman with locations of Edinburgh & London beneath W. Blackwood and Sons.
"The motto for Chapter XVII, in Book II (vol. I, p. 336), has the corrected reading 'truth' in place of 'true' and no corresponding erratum slip. However the incorrect reading in Book V (vol. III, p. 34), 'Ashtaroth', remains uncorrected."--Cf. Baker & Ross.
