Summary:
The Norton Chinese collection includes superb ritual bronzes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, archaic jades from the 3rd millennium to the 2nd century BCE, Buddhist sculpture, tomb sculptures, porcelains of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and exquisitely carved decorative jades and semi-precious stone carvings of the 18th and 19th centuries. The catalogue contains 85 full-page color photographs and in-depth catalogue entries for no works of art. Three illustrated, scholarly essays by leading specialists in their fields, including Colin Mackenzie of the Asia Society, New York, and Jenny F. So of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, round out the presentation of the Norton's exemplary holdings. The new catalogue represents the first publication of the collection since 1972, reflecting the most recent research in China and the West as well as the remarkable discoveries of Chinese archaeological exploration since the 1950s.
