Summary:
The Caribbean Heritage series is designed to publish new editions of historically significant works of fiction from our region. The first three volumes in the series comprise four Trinidadian novels published between 1838 and 1907. A substantial introduction and thorough annotations contextualize each of the original texts. This second volume in the series presents two novels, Adolphus, A Tale and The Slave Son. Adolphus was first published in 1853 as a newspaper serial and was probably written by a Trinidadian of mixed race - thus far the first novel written by someone born and reared in Trinidad, and the first novel written by a person of mixed race. The dramatic tale traces the story of the romance of Adolphus and Antonia, both of mixed race. Antonia, kidnapped by the brutal DeGuerinon, must be rescued by Adolphus and his friends, including the slave Cudjoe The Slave Son, by Marcella Fanny Noy Wilkins, was originally published in 1854. Written partly to support the abolitionist movement in the United States, it is set within the vibrant and volatile society of Trinidad in the period just before emancipation. The central romance of Belfond, an escaped slave, and Laurine, a freed slave, plays against an array of characters from estate owners and ship captains to vendors and slaves.
