"The first instalment ... was published in The Graphic on July 19, 1873, and ran uninterruptedly until January 10, 1874. Each of the twenty-six instalments had an illustration by Frank Holl, of which only twenty-four were reproduced in the first English book edition. It may, however, be noticed that the first American edition of the novel contained the full series of twenty-six plates."--Cf. Sadleir.
